Sewer Line Permit Requirements
The on-line permit is available for properties in Sunnyvale with a residential zoning district. Zoning district information is available on-line by clicking on E-Zoning.

This permit will allow replacement of the existing sewer line between the building and the City clean out.

Following is a listing of the general requirements for replacing sewer lines based on the 2019 California Plumbing Code and the Sunnyvale Municipal Code. This brochure is intended to provide general information, contact the Building Safety Division for any questions or additional information.
  • Material for sewer lines outside of the building (minimum 2’ outside) can be cast iron, copper type DWV, or schedule 40 DWV ABS/PVC (when used in residential buildings, ABS/PVC is limited to two-story buildings; there is no limit on the number of stories for non-residential buildings). (CPC 701.2)

  • Clean outs shall be installed at the exterior of the building, at each aggregate horizontal change in direction exceeding 135°, and at the property line. Property line clean outs shall be one-way and have a Christy Box G-5 or equal when in a paved area or F-8 or equal when in a landscaped area. (CPC 707.4, 719 and SMC 18.12.150)

  • Sewer line shall be 12” below grade minimum and have a minimum of ¼” per one foot slope. (CPC 708)
The Sewer Line Permit is NOT available on-line if you are:
  • If it is part of a larger remodel project.
  • Replacing or repairing a septic tank or system.
  • Installing a new connection to the City sewer main.
If any of the above conditions apply, the permit shall be issued at the One-Stop Permit Center, City Hall, 456 W Olive Avenue. Specific process information is available at the Building Division web site.

  • Two inspections are required for sewer line replacements, a rough and a final. The rough inspection should be scheduled when the new sewer line is installed (but before it is connected to the City connection) and filled with water to check for any leaks. The final inspection should be scheduled when all work is completed.
