Gasline Permit Requirements
The on-line permit is available for properties in Sunnyvale with a residential zoning district.

This gas line permit will allow the installation of a new gas line from the gas meter directly to
an appliance. Following are the minimum requirements that must be met based on the 2007
California Building Codes:

Gas pipe material shall be as follows:

Indoor installation: wrought iron or steel (galvanized or black), yellow brass. Corrugated stainless
steel tubing may be used when first approved by the Chief Building Official on case by case bases. (CPC 1209.5)

Outdoor, above ground installation: galvanized wrought iron or galvanized steel. (CPC 1209.5.2 and 1209.5.3)

Underground installation: factory-coated material listed for underground gas line installation and
installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements. Fittings may be wrapped in the field with an
approved material. When using non-metallic pipe, an electrically continuous corrosion-resistant tracer wire
(minimum AWG 14) or tape shall be buried with the piping. Pipes shall be installed a minimum of 18” below grade.

Unions (inline couplings) are only permitted downstream (after) appliance shut-off valves, meter locations,
and immediately downstream on building shut-off valves. The use of right/left couplings and nipples are required
in all other locations.

Shut-off valves are required ahead of all gas appliances. They must remain accessible from the same rooms as the
appliance and shall be within three feet of the appliance.

Test pressure shall be no less than 1-1/2 times the proposed maximum working pressure, but not less than 3 psi.
The test duration shall be a minimum of 10 minutes. Test gauges shall have a scale not greater than five times
the test pressure. (CPC 12.14.3.2)

The GasLine Permit is NOT available on-line if you are:
- Installing a new gas line that does not start from the gas meter.
- Extending an existing gas to a different or new appliance/use.
- If the new gas line serves an appliance or equipment located outside.

If any of the above conditions apply, the permit shall be issued at the One-Stop
Permit Center, City Hall, 456 W Olive Avenue. Specific process information

Inspections

Two inspections are required. The first inspection is a pressure
test when the gas line is installed. The final inspection should be
scheduled after all the work is completed.
