Masonry Chimney Repair Permit
Requirements
The on-line permit is available for properties in Sunnyvale with a residential zoning district.
Zoning district information is available on-line by clicking on E-Zoning.
The masonry chimney repair permit will allow repair of an existing fireplace and/or chimney.
Following are the minimum requirements that must be met based on the 2007 California Building Code:
- The fireplace and chimney repair and construction must comply with
Chapter 21 and Section 2111 of the California Building Code.
- Contact the Building Inspection Division
for requirements and handouts with fireplace-chimney repair
construction requirements and diagrams.
The Masonry Chimney Permit is
NOT available on-line if you are:
- Building a new chimney.
- Adding a gas appliance.
- Adding a fireplace insert.

If any of the above conditions apply, the permit shall be issued at the One-Stop
Permit Center, City Hall, 456 W Olive Avenue. Specific process information
is available at the
Building Division web site.

Inspections
- Two inspections are required. The first inspection should be scheduled when the new steel and straps are installed. The final inspection should be scheduled after all work is complete.
